Why do we at all need to meditate? So…..finally, Meditation is a “must”!

4

To be able to achieve the ‘ultimate’, viz. self-realisation, meditation is the stepping stone; it’s the only way through which one can understand and discover true self.

A person who meditates for ten days, daily an hour, is better than the one who has been going to temple for ten years every day, bowing in front of idols alone. This is not to demean the importance of going to temples/worshipping but just to say that merely visiting temples doesn’t help! It becomes fruitful only when that worship translates into an effort to recognise ‘self’ through meditation.

Meditation is a tool for cleansing our soul! We all are busy cleaning our physical body which is full of impurities inside out, instead we need to clean our soul which is also tarnished by unwanted pollutants like jealousy, greed, falsehood, anger, lust and more. Meditation helps us overcome these evils attached to our soul. If after meditation, a person loses temper even for a short while or gives in to one of the aforementioned evils, then the entire purpose of meditation is lost. If the ill habits remain despite practising meditation, then it is of no use. But lets not forget that it takes time, dedication and guidance to reach such a state!

Meditation is the ‘path’ as well as the ‘door’ to reach God. One needs to go blank, feel a state of nothingness and resort to total silence and then alone God will communicate with you, or in other words, only then will you be able to hear Him!

Since this path is beyond the comprehension of our mind and intellect, it is difficult to believe and understand. One has to go beyond the normal span of mind to acquire full appreciation of meditation which is the ultimate spiritual path to realise “self” which is “I”or the consciousness. The ultimate truth that one comes to know by searching within through meditation is the knowledge that “I am the absolute”!

If you taste this elixir called meditation even once you’ll feel ultimate bliss! It is an addiction one must have, an addiction one would never want to give up on.

How long should one meditate?

Meditation can be done for any duration from 10 minutes to one hour. However, the best way to do it, is to remember God at all times. One subtle way of getting into this mode is to see positive side of every aspect/every situation in life and to thank God for everything you get. Whenever you see beautiful and bountiful nature around you like the trees, the flowers, the lakes, the clouds… thank God for His creation. This not only helps in spiritual progress of the person but also eliminates negative thoughts and brings about positivity in ones life.

Before starting off with your meditation in the morning, one should pray for five minutes around these thoughts –

  • I pray to God to give knowledge, wisdom and success to all children studying in schools.
  • I pray to God for early recovery and healing of all patients in hospitals and everywhere.
  • I pray to God to guide and show the right path to all the prisoners and to all those who have ventured out on the wrong path.
  • I pray to God for all living beings on earth, to keep them happy and blissful.

Once you start meditating and are able to concentrate, you start enjoying it and then duration is no dimension at all.

When you start meditating, God’s response is invariably quick. It comes in different forms like viewing of lights, fragrance or rhythm or tal etc. You suddenly start realising that there is something beyond your five senses. One gradually starts realising that meditation helps in solving the daily life problems as well. Though one may feel that we have to give up the materialistic pleasures for spiritual goals but Swamiji says that detachment from materialistic life does not mean that one gives up ones wealth and possessions. It is basically a mental exercise and you need to ensure that your mind is not always occupied in the pursuit of material things in life.

Feelings of peace and bliss start developing from within and one feels a level above as one progresses in meditation.

Truth of Life – Part 1

4

Most of us, sometime or the other in our life, especially when facing lows, wonder as to Who exactly are we? Why are we here? Why such miseries in this world? Is there anything called God or Superpower? How is it that despite so many inefficiencies and irregularities apparent in day-to-day lives is the Universe/world continuing? When did it all start and how and by whom? Is there an end to it? What is the ultimate objective of our origin?

All the above questions are not new and arise in each one’s mind in different phases of our lives!

When we pose these questions to Swamiji, He is very glad and states that His journey also started with similar queries from His own self and He was fortunate to have unravelled these mysteries for Himself, and now intends to share and spread the same with everyone.

To be continued…

Swamiji has made it very Simple. You need not specifically do any preparation for starting meditation. It is not necessary to take a bath before meditation. There is no fixed time during the day and it can be done anytime as per convenience. There is no specific pose in which you are supposed to sit and you can be in a posture in which you are most comfortable, and can sit for a longer time without discomfort.

To start with, it is advised to –

  1. Have an image/picture of your “Isht Dev” in front of you. It could be anyone in whom one has faith or has been worshiping, It could even be your Guru.
  2. One can light a lamp (“jyot”) in front of the image and make it a focus point.
  3. Focusisng on the image/Jyot, one can start meditation and slowly close his/her eyes.
  4. Gradually one must try and concentrate towards the middle portion of both the eyes (where Bindi is normally applied)
  5. Any Mantra can be recited during the mediation (either given by your Guru or any other)

Initially, various thoughts shall surround you but consciously, you need to see and acknowledge that despite not wanting, these thoughts are coming and you need to see them as third person. Once you are able to view these extraneous thoughts as a third person, they shall gradually disappear and you will learn to concentrate.

Keep practising while increasing your time of meditation as you go on.

Once you are on to it, you will realise that you no more need any aids for meditation and you will be able to do it more often and for longer time period. Gradually you will start liking it and may even lose the sense of time while meditating.
